The client came to us with an intervention that wasn't working. Their stress-management training for parents of children with autism was stalled by parental stress - parents were too overwhelmed to put the new skills into action.
Practiced Mind, a customizable app that delivers mindfulness meditation training as part of a research intervention. Trifoia closed the gap between the online classroom and real life with an easy-to-use app to help parents better manage meltdowns, soothe tensions, and strengthen parent-child connections.
The Trifoia Process
We collaborated with the client and research partners to identify mindfulness meditation as an effective stress-management technique.
Our design research team selected iOS and Android mobile platforms for delivering the program, as they were already accessible to the targeted users.
We loaded the app with guided meditations that help manage stress through mindfulness - a practice that encourages participants to be more fully present and to give purposeful, nonjudgmental attention to their thoughts, emotions, and body's physical sensations.
We wanted parents to feel connected with their meditation practice, so we added prompts for choosing favorite meditations, setting daily reminders, and uploading personal photos.
We made the app free to download on iTunes App Store and Google Play Store.
We felt pretty good about helping parents feel more content and effective as parents.
Initially developed to evaluate an online coaching program for parents of children with autism, Practiced Mind is now a key component of the coaching and self-directed programs as well as a standalone product. Parents and practitioners alike use and recommend the app. The mobile platform has been made available to other research projects and interventions.
